Is a Seabob faster above or under Water?

A very frequent asked Question is the Seabob speed. Is a Seabob faster under or above the water? Speeds according to the manufacturer (under ideal conditions): Seabob CAYAGO VX2 (5 HP) above water 18 km/h ( 11,2 mph) under water 14 km/h (8,7 mph) Seabob CAYAGO F7 above water 22 km/h (13,7 mph) under water 16 km/h (9,9 mph)
In spite of the manufactures information we somehow felt that the Seabob is faster under water ... we verified this assumption with a test set up. We unreeled a 100 meter line above and under water and compared the speed. Big surprise, even with full scuba dive gear a Seabob is slightly faster under water. Have a look at our 100 m speed test film: |
