Is a Seabob faster above or under Water?

A very frequent asked Question is the Seabob speed. Is a Seabob faster under or above the water?

Speeds according to the manufacturer (under ideal conditions):

Seabob CAYAGO VX2 (5 HP)

above water 18 km/h ( 11,2 mph)

under water 14 km/h (8,7 mph)

Seabob CAYAGO F7

above water 22 km/h (13,7 mph)

under water 16 km/h (9,9 mph)

 

In spite of the manufactures information we somehow felt that the Seabob is faster under water ... we verified this assumption with a test set up. We unreeled a 100 meter line above and under water and compared the speed.  Big surprise, even with full scuba dive gear a Seabob is slightly faster under water.
